One tradition of mine is Christmas Tree Decorations. The more colourful and untraditional, the better. Every year I love to find a new decoration which inspires me to get the tree up. Bottle of cheap bubbly, Christmas movie (Usually The Holiday) and up it goes with the colourful eclectic mix.
One year warming up in a beautiful Chester store I came across delicate precious Buddha. I fell in love and he went right to the top of my tree. He moved home twice with me staying out all year long because he is too beautiful to be just for Christmas.
Recently though he broke his knee, or, I broke his knee plonking him down too hard after dusting him. Over the next few months the fine glass continued to break. I was worried soon he wouldn’t have a bottom to sit on!
I realised yesterday, I was holding onto him because he has given me so much joy. But, he is broken, and every time I look at him or try to dust him I end up with tiny shards of glass. It was difficult to let go of him but he had to go.
Isn’t he beautiful! I thought the moral of my story here was to say… If an ornament you treasure is broken and cannot be fixed, maybe it is time to let go. Enjoy the memory and move on.
I realise now though the moral is to use our belongings, however precious. Pop those fragile trinkets out where they can see the sun, where we can enjoy them, (by ‘we’ I don’t mean my cat or your kids) Go grab those expensive heels and underused designer bags and make USE of them.
Inspire a new tradition of using and appreciating the ‘stuff’ we have. Use them well, and when they are scuffed, wrinkled and falling apart… That is when they tell a story.
Happy sorting
